Make International Returns Less Stressful This Tax Season

U.S. citizens living and working abroad face a completely different set of tax rules—and it’s easy for even experienced practitioners to miss something important.

Beyond Borders: Tax Compliance for U.S. Citizens Abroad is a practical, in-person session designed to help you confidently handle international issues that show up in everyday 1040 work.

We’ll focus on four core areas:

  • FBAR reporting (FinCEN Form 114)

  • Foreign Earned Income Exclusion (Form 2555)

  • Form 2350 to extend time to meet FEIE qualifications

  • Foreign Tax Credit (Form 1116) and how it interacts with FEIE

You’ll leave with a clearer framework for spotting issues, asking the right questions, and avoiding common pitfalls when your clients live or work overseas.

Learn, Connect, and Reset Before Tax Season Hits

business party in office at spread the word

This program is also our chapter holiday party and final in-person gathering before tax season.

It’s a chance to:

  • Connect with other tax professionals who understand the same deadlines and client pressures

  • Share best practices and real-world strategies for the coming season

  • Pick up ideas and insights that can save you time, stress, and late-night problem-solving in February

Sometimes one conversation with another practitioner is worth more than a dozen Google searches. This is your space to breathe, connect, and head into the next tax season feeling more prepared—and a lot less alone.

What You’ll Be Able to Do After This Workshop

By the end of the session, you’ll be able to:

  • Identify when U.S. citizens abroad must file FBARs (FinCEN Form 114), including thresholds and key requirements

  • Determine eligibility for the Foreign Earned Income Exclusion (Form 2555) using the Physical Presence Test and the Bona Fide Residence Test

  • Understand when Form 2350 is appropriate, and how it helps taxpayers qualify for FEIE timing

  • Recognize when the Foreign Tax Credit (Form 1116) is a better fit than FEIE (and when it isn’t)

  • Navigate basic income-sourcing rules and avoid common preparer mistakes with expat clients

Learning Level: Intermediate
Prerequisites: No formal prerequisites. General familiarity with Form 1040 is helpful but not required.

Is This Workshop for You?
